Will freelancing give me the skills I need to run a small business?
Aug 16, 2019  |  Kenelm Tonkin

It would be fantastic if that were the case but, sadly, the answer is no.

There are six types of people in business:

  • Employees
  • Freelancers
  • Franchisees
  • Owner-managers
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Investors

There’s a hierarchy in that list. From top to bottom, the skills required are more and more sophisticated.

There are 14 Entrepreneurial Disciplines.

Freelancing will give you exposure to some of these skills but not all. For instance, freelancing will force you to learn ‘marketing, sales and publicity’ and ‘cashflow, accounting and tax.’ However, freelancing won’t give you the opportunity to learn ‘people, talent, teams’ or ‘capital raising’ or ‘exit strategies.’

Review the list and you’ll see what I mean.

If you’ve always been an employee to this point, freelancing is a way to dip your toe in the self-reliance pond.

Please understand though. It’s a long way from running a small business.

Small steps though. Give it a try.
